Group Project
This week my group finally made some headway when it felt we were at a stand still. It is primarily interesting to us how the administration is so against us (UT students) from visiting the school, especially when it could help promote education in some of their student. That will be another topic for another day though. As far as our project goes, we plan on visiting the school to get an idea of how the school is separated and the benefits of the regular LBJ school is much less resourced than the magnet school that is just upstairs. Also our main goal is to give them idea about what it is like to be in college but primarily what it is like to be a minority in college. Talking to them we will break down in groups and give them information about what types of resources they have available for them to prepare for college and what types of resources they have available once they get in college. These programs are especially important when you are a part of a minority group that is a small percentage at a PWI. Hopefully this discussion will spark a light in some of these kids minds that college is an option and having learned about these resources, hopefully it will make things feel a bit more easier. Another thing we are hoping for, is that after we meet with the children, that this project can become an annual project, where LBJ can partner with another organization or class on campus that will be willing to do this on a yearly/ semesterly basis.

I love everything about your group's project. It is disappointing to hear that the school is kind of against college students coming to their school to promote college. I think it is a great idea to let the students know what kind of resources they will have once going to college, because without these resources one might feel lost/disconnected/have a bad experience in college. I feel like if there are more groups doing what you are doing we will start to see more minority students, rich and poor, realize that it is possible to go to college.
ReplyDeleteYeah I agree with Sholeh that really sucks. I have never heard of a high school rejecting the promotion of college! It kind of upsets me and if I were their parents I would have to reconsider them attending a school like that. I think college is an opportunity and an experience and should be advertised to all students starting from grade school or even before then.
ReplyDeleteBeing that Im in your group and I know whats going on, I mentioned practically everything you said. We have plenty of work coming up, but the project will be successful and I think our project is one of the most important projects since it makes a direct effect on people outside of the UT Campus.
ReplyDeleteIt's crazy that they are against you all being a positive light for their students. It really shows what our "school system" has become. Their focus is not about the students being successful, but about how long the school can keep their money and status. It's becoming a cycle, and it scares me that these children will be our future. What is the world coming to?!
